Thousands visit war reenactment

Posted:

Thousands of people took a step back in time this weekend to remember the Bicentennial of the War of 1812.

Reenactors from all over the Midwest participated in the 4th annual event.

From French settlers to the Woodland Indians, there were plenty of opportunities for visitors to get a glimpse of life during that time period.

Located at River Preserve County Park where Chief Five Medals would have existed from the 1760s to the 1800s. There was entertainment for all ages and entertaining history lessons.

"It gets people out of their traditional learning styles. So instead of being in a classroom and being talked to about history, they're really experiencing it first hand and we think people take away more with that sometimes," says Matt Schuld, Elkhart County Historical Museum Manager.

The weekend started out with 500-600 school children visiting Friday.

And a couple thousand people went through the gates for this event that has grown steadily over the years.
