The National Transportation safety board says a switch was reversed, sending an Amtrak train into a rail yard Sunday near Niles.
178 people were on board the Detroit-bound train when it derailed north of the Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport. Several people were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
The NTSB says the train had a green signal, allowing it to go at its maximum speed. Investigators say a switch on the main track was in a position that sent the train into the yard. The train dislodged a derailing device, used to protect cars from rolling out of the yard onto the main line. The train derailed about 300 feet from the switch.
The train continued into the yard, stopping about 21 feet from some hopper cars stored in the yard.
The NTSB is still investigating the accident. A full report may take several months.
