Michiana residents react to Mourdock rape comment

Posted:

Mourdock's comment went viral right away.  And ever since it has been drawing a lot of comments.
We hit the streets to find out what voters think and how his comments could affect the upcoming election.

Michael Hubbard said, "I believe it's a life that's going to be brought on this earth no matter what."  While Daniel Mclemore said, "if it was forcefully done that's not an act of God.  That's an act of sin, evilness,  hatred."  Two very different opinions on Richard's Murdock's beliefs.  And a lot of people said it's not what Mourdock said but how he said it.  George Lane said,  "I was shocked for every woman.  That's something you don't say about women.  When women are raped it's a criminal offense."  And Tom Leazenby said, "He really didn't mean that to be against women at all."

Some voters stand behind Mourdock and said the controversy is being blown out of proportion.  Leazenby said,  "I don't like that they picked on that one particular thing when he does have a lot of good ideas."  Still others think what he said merits all the attention he's getting.  "I can't believe he said it on national tv and still expects to get women's votes," said Ryan Hunter.

So what about those votes?  Are Mourdock's comments a game changer?  But political analyst Patrick Pierce said "yes."  "There are few folks who are going to take that extreme a position on abortion.  The bulk of Hoosier voters are not going to respond positively," said Pierce.

Pierce said Mourdock's words will carry weight in the Presidential election, as well.  Mitt Romney just appeared in an add supporting Mourdock.  He's not pulling his support but Romney said he doesn't take the same stand against abortion in the case of rape.  Pierce said this will ultimately help Obama and distract the Romney campaign.  "This is not something that Mitt Romney wanted to talk about that much during the course of the campaign.  Now he has to talk about it.  That weakens his campaign.  It makes it easier for Obama's campaign to portray Romney and Mourdock as the phrase they've used 'the war on women,'" said Pierce.

Pierce said the combination of talking about God, rape, and abortion was the perfect formula for catching a lot of people's attention here locally and nationally.
