5-year-old child hit by vehicle in Elkhart County

A 5-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle Thursday afternoon on the 13000 block of County Road 22 in Elkhart County.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department says Jaylon Schmucker of Middlebury walked into the street near County Road 35. A car driven by 79-year-old Betty Kauffman of Goshen was heading south on 22 and was not able to stop in time.

Schmucker was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital for treatment. Authorities say his injuries were not life threatening.
