Indiana teachers colleges see drop in applications

The number of applications to Indiana teacher colleges is at its lowest level in at least five years, and education leaders say new state laws are keeping people from entering the field.

Applications are down at Purdue, Ball State and Indiana University.

The decline stems in large part from a wave of education changes that emerged from the 2011 Legislature. Their goal is to increase teacher and school accountability, but many teachers feel they're under fire and are being blamed for failing schools.

Gov. Mitch Daniels says the old system didn't perform well. He thinks the changes should excite teachers and ensure the best ones are in the classroom.

Daniels will become president of Purdue University in January.
