40,000 pounds of food are heading to the east coast Tuesday morning.
Stefan Radelich, executive director of Feed the Hungry in South Bend, says they are preparing a trailer to send into New York to help in relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy. This trailer will meet up with two other Feed the Hungry trailers and the combination will feed around 3,000 people short term. Radelich says they are sending lots of crackers, granola bars, and liquids to hold families over while they may be without electricity and transportation. The food has been donated by donors and sponsors across the country.
Radelich said, "Even though it is miles and miles away, there are grandmothers, grandfathers, moms, dads, children who are in harms way and are going to have a tough couple of weeks here after the storm passes."
Which is why he says Feed the Hungry will be offering help for as long as they're needed.
