A grand opening today that was many years in the making...
South Bend Animal Control had the grand opening of their new animal shelter On Wednesday. This move was years in the making. They started in 1996 working out of a 3,000 square foot former fire station.
Now they have a shelter that's easy to clean, with a separate air handling system for odors, a separate quarantined area for aggressive animals, air conditioning. The latter something they haven't had before.
"We've had many, many compliments," said Manager Gary Libbey. "People that have been through the old building. They just can't believe how nice this building is. We have volunteer opportunities now, where it's a friendly place for people to come. We'll have a meet and greet room where if someone's looking for a pet, they can take it out of the kennel."
The old facility had 17 kennels, while this one has 45. Animal control workers say not only are they thrilled about having more space, but the animals seem less stressed, as well.
If you want to stop by the new facility, it's at 521 Eclipse Place next to Kennedy Water Playground.
