SBCSC officials react to state report card

Posted:

Report cards are out from the state for Michiana school districts.

In South Bend, 8 schools failed.

14 out of 32 saw a drop in their grades.

Five saw an improvement.

The district is questioning whether the State's Grading System is fair.

South Bend Schools Superintendent Carole Schmidt says the report card is a little skewed.
She says a new formula doesn't account for growth in the last three years.

"There's a consistent upward trend. And the trend is at a faster pace than the state average. So that, we're please with," says Schmidt.

School Board member William Sniadecki agrees.

He says the formula simply isn't fair.

"It's not what's on paper, it's what's in their heads, and we have proved, South Bend School Corporation has proved that we have made significant improvement in each child's case," says Sniadecki.

But Schmidt says they're working on a fix for struggling schools.

"Have very specific plans that the principals are monitoring and supporting teachers, based on the data that we get back, so if we've got a child who's below grade level on reading, we've got interventions," says Schmidt.

Schmidt says efforts to boost schools' grades have been working.
Dickinson Fine Arts Academy stands out, going from an F to an A in one year.

School Board member Dawn Jones says one thing that's working for Dickinson is a lot of parent involvement.

"They can be in the lunch room, or in the hallway, just their presence is definitely a benefit to the schools," says Jones.

Enrollment numbers were also out Wednesday.

South Bend lost 420 students this year.

The Corporation budgeted for a loss of about 360.

Last year the district lost more than 600 students.

An earlier version of this story said 8 South Bend Schools had received a grade of "F." The state has since amended the number to 7.
