Notre Dame's triple-overtime win over Pitt Saturday didn't help the Irish in the polls, it actually hurt them. Notre Dame falls to 4th in the BCS standings. Oregon jumped the Irish after it's win over USC. All of the top 4 teams remained undefeated. Alabama and Kansas State stay put at 1 and 2.
The Irish definitely had luck on their side. In overtime when Pitt missed the potential game winning field goal, Notre Dame should have been called for a penalty with two number 2's on the field. That would have given Pitt a first down. Which would have given the Panthers four more tries.
NCAA rules allow teams to have duplicate numbers on a roster, but not on the field at the same time. Wide receiver Chris Brown and cornerback Bennett Jackson were both wearing No. 2.
"It was a coaching mistake," Brian Kelly said in his Sunday teleconference. "We had put our desperado team on there and Chris Brown is part of desperado. We've got to do a better job, an oversight that can't happen."
