Some Crossing Educational Center students learned a new trade Friday, tree cutting. 25 students along with staff cut down 50 unhealthy trees at Bent Oak Golf Course in Elkhart Friday afternoon.
The center has a tree removal service managed by staff and students as part of its job training program. The group used its own chainsaws and wood splitters as well a pickup truck from Gates Chevy World. A faculty member said this program is more valuable than learning from a textbook. "This is to teach them a real-life skill not just to talk about careers, study careers but actually get out her and get their hands dirty," said Rob Staley the Executive Director of The Crossing.
After work the students experienced a camping adventure. They stayed at a cabin, cooked food and sat by a fire to talk about everyday life.
