South Bend School Corp. asking for your input on planning

Posted:

South Bend Schools is doing something it hasn't it a long time.

The district is developing a strategic plan.

Not only has it been a while since a strategic plan was adopted, South Bend Schools have lost hundreds of students because of the state's voucher program.

But the district is being proactive.

Officials are searching for solutions and they want your help!

The first in a series of public meetings was held Monday night.

There were a few dozen people in the auditorium of John Adams High School, many of them teachers and staff.

Teachers say parent involvement is their number one concern.

They want to see specific invitations to parents to get them more involved instead of just talking about it.

Anne Hayner is the parent of two South Bend School students.

She says while her kids have had a great education, one thing's for sure, communication can be improved to get parents at meetings like Monday night's.

"I'm just amazed that there wouldn't be, in this day and age, an email list for instance that the school wouldn't be able to communicate with all the sophomore class families and parents," says Hayner.

Communication and parental involvement are two of the biggest issues addressed at the first public meeting.

Concerns Superintendent Dr. Carole Schmidt says will be considered.

"I'm sure a lot of things will come up. I don't know what those might be, but whatever they have to say, we're certainly willing to listen," says Schmidt.

Right now the district has a draft of what the strategic plan could like.

A final version won't likely be out until late spring.

The next meeting is Tuesday at Washington High School.  It is at 7:00pm.

If you cannot make it to either meeting, you can also fill out an online survey.

For more information on the planning sessions, go to the South Bend Community School Corporation website.
