New members of the South Bend Police force were welcomed Wednesday. It was an exciting moment for seven men and women who will now wear the badge. They said their oaths and signed their names and now they are officially officers!
Many of them say they were inspired by others to go into this field. Anjelica Glaspie said, "My family was military. A lot of them were in the Army. I didn't choose to go that route. I wanted to work in a local city so I choose law enforcement." And Joseph Carey said, "It was one of the things that my dad never wanted his kids to do, never wanted his kids to go into law enforcement. He didn't want to have to worry about us. I finally got the courage to ask him one day to give me permission if he thought it would be ok to sign up and he said if that's what I wanted to do I could go for it." Carey said he signed up the very next day right after his dad gave him permission. He said he understands the risks involved but is excited to serve the people of South Bend.
