St. Joseph County firefighters had their hands full with a garage fire in Lakeville overnight. It happened at 66251 Kenilworth Road, which is just east of U.S. 31.
The fire broke out just before 1 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters say it looks like the blaze started in a garage behind the house. Lakeville firefighters got a hand from Southwest and LaPaz Fire Departments. Thanks to the group effort the fire was under control in around 20 minutes. It did not spread to the house but it almost did.
"It started melting the siding on the back of the house, so it was pretty close to catching the house on fire," said Lakeville Fire Department Assistant Chief Jason Casad.
Casad says there were two men and some kids inside the house but everyone did make it out without being injured.
The Lakeville Fire Department is still trying to figure out how the fire started.
