Update: Tank at Elkhart oil company explodes

Posted:

An explosion rocked an Elkhart oil facility Friday afternoon.

The call came in just before 3:00pm of a possible propane tank explosion at the Yoder Oil Company.  The facility is in the 1100 block of Kent Street.

A chief with the Elkhart Fire Department says a diesel tank that was being taken apart for scrap exploded.
McFarland says a flash fire happened as crews were cutting it apart.
A worker was flown to an area burn center.
Witnesses tell us there was a big explosion with large flames.
Folks at a business across the street say they felt a rumble.
OSHA is expected to join the investigation soon.

Correction: Original reports put the accident at Yoder Truck Stop.  The explosion actually happened at the Oil Company next door.
