Little Autumn Dawn came fast.
"My water broke on the bus pretty much and then she came out (laughs)," says mother Skylla Hurt.
And Autumn came in the most unusual fashion.
"I was having contractions all morning."
But when Hurt boarded an Interurban trolley in Elkhart, she had no idea she would have her little girl before the trip was over.
"It felt like it was coming out." And she says things moved quick from there. When her water broke, the trolley driver pulled over in front of the Goshen courthouse.
"I was trying to hurry up to the hospital," says Hurt.
But her baby was here before the driver could even make it back to help.
"The mother said 'this baby is coming,' so the driver and another passenger went to assist her and pretty much boom the baby was there," says Laura Dennison.
Dennison from Royal Excursion, which run the Interurban trolley, says the driver called 911 immediately, but the baby was delivered before paramedics arrived. Dennison says the driver took all the right actions.
"We have not trained them on how to deliver babies! But they know exactly what they're doing when there is an emergency." She says this the first time any of the drivers have been in a situation like this.
"Our drivers certainly see a lot of action, a lot of really great things and a lot of things that are cause for concern, but this is just a joyous occasion that on Thanksgiving week we all get to celebrate the birth of this baby girl on our trolley," says Dennison.
And no one is more thankful than mom and baby Autumn, who is safe and healthy at five pounds, three ounces and eighteen inches long.
