ISP warns of counterfeit 100 bills

Posted:

With the rush in shoppers expected this weekend retailers need to be on the lookout for counterfeit bills.

Some stores in South Bend have actually already been victims of the fake bills.  South Bend Police say two Walmart stores have received five fake 100 dollar bills in the past week.

Captain Phil Trent says the pens used to detect fake bills will not work.  That's because the counterfeiters are using a bleaching technique that washes off the ink of five dollar bills then prints 100 on them.

The only way to find out if they're fake is to look at the bill closely.  "That watermark when you hold it up to the light will show Abraham Lincoln's portrait and the security thread will say USA five dollars instead of Benjamin Franklin and USA 100 dollars," explained Captain Phil Trent.

Real one hundred dollar bills will have a picture of Ben Franklin.  The US Mint and Treasury has some information of how to check your currency on their website.
