Elkhart County charities will be seeing a big boost thanks to a federal program. The county was awarded $98,943 to support emergency food and shelter programs.
The funds are awarded through a Department of Homeland security program. The money will now be distributed to area charities through a county board. That board is made up of local government officials and representatives from the United Way, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Catholic Charities.
Local charities that meet certain criteria can apply for a portion of the funds through December 14.
According to the board, the groups must have:
- Not-for-profit (501c3) status
- An accoutning system and conduct an annual audit
- Non-discrimination policies and procedures in place
- Demonstrated ability to consistently deliver quality food and/or shelter programs
- A board of directors which meets at least quarterly
- A food or shelter program that supplies a unique, non-overlapping service to the county
Qualifying organizations can apply by contacting Darren Bickel at 574-295-1650.
