Police tapes saga will continue, hearing postponed

The South Bend Police tapes saga will continue.  A status hearing was held Monday morning at the Saint Joseph County Courthouse.

Judge Gotsch decided to continue the case with the next hearing date scheduled for February 15. The judge also noted that a Federal Court has jurisdiction over the matter.

This all started earlier this year with a federal investigation of the South Bend police department's practice of recording phone calls.

Police Chief Daryl Boykins was demoted and Communications Director Karen DePaepe was let go after the recorded phone calls were discovered.  South Bend continues a search for Boykins' replacement

Boykins is currently suing the city, saying his demotion was not over the tapes, but due to his race.  Another lawsuit is also underway pitting several police officers against the city.

Mayor Buttigieg has stated that he wants a Federal Court to decide if the tapes should be released.

On Monday, Citizens United for a Better Government stated that they want more transparency in the search for a new police chief.
