Donation will cover half of student ticket price - Fox 28: South Bend, Elkhart IN News, Weather, Sports

$300,000 ND donation for student tickets

Posted:

"I couldn't believe that one person shelled out all that money which is fantastic," says Sunee Fleshman, a Notre Dame student.

A big chunk of change was given to Notre Dame to help students cheer on their fellow Irish as they take on Alabama in the National Championship.

"He was concerned that the ticket prices may be prohibiting for the average student and wondered what he could do to help out," says university spokesman, Dennis Brown.

It's an anonymous gift to the university that cuts the ticket price for students in half.

"It's really a gift to the student body to allow them the experience of the National Championship Game," says Brown.

The university has 2,000 tickets for students, which will now cost 150 bucks. Making this a $300,000 donation.

"I have not heard of this kind of thing before with previous Bowl games, here or elsewhere," says Brown.

But he says the university is grateful and so are students.

"$150, that's do-able. It's just super generous of this unnamed donor," says ND student Michael Anderson.

"I'm pretty excited. It saves me some money, especially for next semester. I'm pretty low on cash so it's a nice, generous donation," says student Thomas Falkenberg.

But they say it's not a big surprise.

"When I first read the email I thought it said multiple donors had helped to make this possible and then to know that one person allowed all these students, it's just, it really just drives home that sense of community that's here," says Megan Gin, ND student.

"It just shows how the Notre Dame network is just unparallel, no other school has anything like it," says Anderson.

And with this gift, they say there's even more incentive to make it to Miami.

"Being in that student section, watching all those games are memories that will last a lifetime," says Gin.

Brown says this donation has inspired other alumni. The university has received other gifts that will go towards cutting costs for students as they make their way to the big game.
