People in Benton Harbor will get their chance to weigh in on the city's financial woes Tuesday. Emergency Financial Manager Joe Harris is holding a meeting to find out what people in the city think should be done.
On Election Day Benton Harbor voters rejected a proposal to renew an existing millage that Harris says was a necessary source of income for the city. So now Benton Harbor is faced with the question of how to make up for that and get out of debt.
One of the ideas thrown around was shutting down the city's police department and relying on the Berrien County Sheriff's Department for the city's law enforcement needs. Another idea is to alter the police and fire departments in such a way that the city wouldn't have to pay quite so much.
The public is invited to Tuesday night's meeting. It will be held at 6 p.m. at the Business Growth Center on Paw Paw Avenue. FOX 28 will stay on top of things and let you know what comes of the situation on air and online at FOX28.com
