Holiday decorations are everywhere in Michiana but experts say you need to be careful putting them up.
With so many lights being used the number of electricity related injuries and fires increase this time of year.
Experts say you should use tamper free electric outlets when hooking up your decorations and make sure you have a surge protector, not a power strip.
The good news, many of these upgrades won't cost you much.
"Upgrading from a strip switch that just extends your outlet to a surge protected switch is just a matter of a couple dollars, the cost to replace a normal outlet with a tamper proof outlet, to protect your children is just a couple dollars per outlet," says Jeff Davis of Home Depot.
Davis says you should also check any old space heaters and make sure they have an automatic shut-off feature if they get tipped over.
It's also recommended that you check your smoke detectors and make sure they are working properly.
