Best ice cream in Indiana found in Michiana

Posted:

As if there were not enough reasons to visit Michiana as it is, Thursday Visit Indiana, the state's tourism organization, gave people another.

The state tourism group says that four of the top ten ice cream stores in the state are in Northern Indiana.

"Food experience is always important," said Jackie Hughes, Elkhart Co. Convention Visitor Bureau. "You know when you travel its the thing you talk about and its the thing you look forward to."

If you are headed to Elkhart County anytime soon, and you like ice cream, then you have got a lot to look forward to because all four shops are there. The number one spot in the state is The Chief in Goshen.

"We make all our own ice cream at the shop," said Lowell Vanderveer, The Chief owner. "We make over 16 flavors and it gives us an opportunity to serve this community and Northern Indiana really."

The next stop on the list is just a few miles away from the Chief. The South Side Soda Shop in Goshen might be known for their Philly cheese steaks and chili, but now they can now also call themselves one of the best ice cream places in the state.

"To be picked out for our ice cream and especially the items we do with it is incredible," said Nick Boyd, South Side Soda Shop owner. "For so many [of the best Indiana ice cream shops] to be from this area is wonderful."

People looking for a blast from the past should head to Bonnie and Clyde Soda Shop in Bristol. The 1930's style shop is a big favorite in the community.

"When you're in here and your having one type of serving, I think you find yourself thinking well next time I'll try something else," said Tim Neese, Indiana State Representative.

Rocket Science in Nappanee also made the top ten list.

"To have good food is such a strong draw for a destination," said Hughes. "We have always hung our hat on providing good food here in Elkhart County."

All four shops are still open for business this winter, but the Chief only has a limited amount of ice cream currently.
