Hundreds of Notre Dame Students lined up outside the football stadium Friday trying to get on national television. The campus shot a new commercial Friday that will air during the BCS Championship game. "It's a history making event and just to be seen on national television will be amazing," said Michael Longenecker.
An email was sent to students telling them to show up at the Stadium to be in the commercial.
The students had no idea what they'd be doing, but that didn't matter. Will Holmes said, "I'm not entirely sure what we're gonna be doing in there but we're gonna be supporting the Irish." And Erin Sullivan said, "I've seen their other commercial and my mom personally like cries every time she sees it so I kinda just did it cause I knew she would love watching it."
Students and staff are both equally excited about the large audience the commercial will have. Student Matthew Garcia said, "you walk around campus and see how excited everyone is. You gotta show it to the world." While University Spokesman Dennis Brown said, "we thought for the National Championship game with an audience that may be the biggest audience in the history of college football that we should do something new and fresh."
We weren't allowed inside the stadium while the commercial was shot because Notre Dame wants it to remain a surprise until it airs during the game on January 7th. But from outside we could hear loud cheering. And we can tell you that for at least part of the commercial students were holding candles. Outside the stadium, before students went in, a woman on a megaphone phone told them, "you will have two candles! you'll have one in each hand!"
As students exited the stadium after shooting the commercial they were able to give us a few more details. Mary Calduron said, "they had us do cheers then some guys would start some Christmas song and we'd all sing along."
The University also gave a little more information saying that the message of the commercial is about what a student can expect from a Notre Dame education. It will air only once during the BCS Championship game. So the University just has that one 30 second spot to show off campus, but they're happy to have that. "That's pretty valuable airtime. We don't have to pay for that," said Brown. He added that after it airs, the commercial will be put on the University's website so people can watch it anytime they want.
