A tradition a quarter of a century old continued on Friday. A gorgeous 26-foot tree was cut down at Hensler Nursery to be the Statehouse Christmas Tree in Indianapolis.
John Hensler says this is one of the highlights of the year, taking a fresh tree to be displayed in the rotunda of the government building.
"The tree is a concolor fir that we planted here on the farm and [it is] approximately 26-years-old. We could count the growth rings on the base of the tree and verify that. It's been here 26 years. It started out as a seedling and as you look at it, its a wonderful fragrant tree," Hensler says.
Hensler partners up with Kankakee Valley REMC who gently lowered the fir onto a transport trailer for delivery. They have to have the tree there by Wednesday morning for state house ceremonies.
A classroom of kids will decorate the tree with homemade ornaments. Hensler has volunteered the tree every year.
The Starke County nursery also donated the poinsettias for our set here at FOX28.
