Following the shooting tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, FOX 28 wanted to know what type of safety measures are in place for your children.
Doug Thorne who is the Executive Director of Personnel and Legal Services at Elkhart Community Schools says the district doesn't provide a great deal of detail about safety measures because that in itself is a safety hazard.
Thorne did say, there is controlled access to buildings. For Elementary schools, all access is through the Principal's office only. There are other doors, but they are locked during the day.
At High Schools there is a security kiosk staffed all day, monitoring ingress and egress to the building.
Thorne says the district works very closely with law enforcement to maintain a good relationship and to make sure that security measures are up to date.
Thorne says they listen to students because they're often the first to hear about things that could happen.
Thorne adds staff members always have to be vigilant.
