Students with special needs enjoy a dance party

Elkhart County students got down with their bad selves Friday at a winter dance.

And it wasn't just any dance, about 60 students with special needs were invited to Concord High School for a Christmas Dance.

Teachers say it's not often the kids get to go to school dances so it's particularly special for them.

"They love it. They absolutely love it. They're happy and they get to take a picture home and their parents get to see that and their parents get to see them dress up," says Functional Skills Teacher at Concord High School, Kim Chris.

The dance is hosted by the Student Council who donates several hundred dollars for the event.

Student council members enjoy interacting with the students who have special needs.

"It's actually a chance that we get to work with them and see how they interact and change from normal school work to just having fun for a change," says Student Council member, Courtney Byrd.

Student Council Member, Valeria Salgado says, "My favorite part is seeing students who have moved on to adult programs who were here at Concord when I was younger, seeing them and seeing that they remember me and get excited to see me is a happy moment."

The students were also served a special lunch Friday, although they told us their favorite part was, of course, the dancing.
