Elkhart County students got down with their bad selves Friday at a winter dance. And it wasn't just any dance, about 60 students with special needs were invited to Concord High School for a Christmas Dance. Teachers said it's not often the kids get to go to school dances so it's particularly special for them. "They love it. They absolutely love it. They're happy and they get to take a picture home and their parents get to see that and their parents get to see them dress up," said Kim Chris, Functional Skills Teacher at Concord High School.
The dance is hosted by the Student Council who donates several hundred dollars for the event. The student council members enjoy interacting with the students who have special needs. Courtney Byrd with the Student Council said, "It's actually a chance that we get to work with them and see how they interact and change from normal school work to just having fun for a change." And another Student Council member, Valeria Salgado, said, "My favorite part is seeing students who have moved on to adult programs who were here at Concord when I was younger, seeing them and seeing that they remember me and get excited to see me is a happy moment."
