Swiss Valley starts making snow

Posted:

You may be groaning as you see the weather alerts, announcing colder temperatures and snow. Snowboarders and skiers are celebrating. They're ready to hit the slopes.

"Me and my buddies, we're all just like 'we need snow to come, we need snow to come.' That's basically, yeah we're just waiting for the snow to come. Finally it's here," says snowboarder, Andrew Hepler.

"A little impatient, cause I want to ski pretty bad, but I dunno, the snow has to come first," says skier, Lynsee Ludwick.

These folks have been waiting for some winter weather, but they aren't the only ones.

"There's only so many days that you can have a ski season and each one that goes by is one you can't make up," says Swiss Valley Ski and Snowboard Area manager, Jim Wiseman.

He says the conditions Wednesday were finally good for making snow. "We will make snow continually until we can put on 30 inches of base which will take about three days."

He says ideal snowmaking weather involves temperatures under 28 degrees and low humidity.

Now that we're getting closer to those conditions, Swiss Valley is working around the clock. Usually Wiseman says they try to open during the first of December, but this year they're a little behind.

"Right now, we're gonna have to jump start this pretty hard since we've already missed out on Christmas week."

He says he hopes to be open sometime this weekend because people have been waiting. "The phones ringing all the time and they're happy to hear we're making snow."

"People are very, very anxious, our skiers and snowboarders have been calling and we've been staying in touch," says marketing director, Jamie Stafne.

Stafne says everything else is ready to go and since last year's season was cut short due to mild weather, they're all getting antsy.

"Our staff, our ski instructors, everybody's ready to go, it feels like we've been waiting for winter for quite some time."

But now it's finally here.
