Wednesday's few inches of snow in portions of Michiana were not nearly as innocent as they looked.
Many cars in the area could be seen on the sides of the roads either in a ditch or being towed away throughout the afternoon.
"I think definitely the first snowfall, I was talking to somebody that was in the car with me, you have to kind of retrain yourself how to drive in the snow since this is the first one of the year," said Mackenzie Hill, Jimtown resident.
The snow caught a few drivers off guard, especially those who drove from the west into the South Bend area.
"[In Hammond] there was hardly any snow," said Gene Gurlich. "I found through Chesterton, LaPorte, and South Bend and all this area is the worst part of it."
People who had seen the forecast were not that surprised though and said Wednesday's weather is just part of living in the Michiana area.
"The conditions aren't bad, the roads are just wet, snowy, snow packed, but it's not bad," said Bob Tezich, South Bend resident.
Pretty much everyone had the same advice for people who need to get out on the snowy roads.
"Just drive slow and be more cautious," said Marcia Monroy.
Tow truck businesses in Elkhart and South Bend both said they were as busy as ever because of the slick roads.
According to INDOT, as of Wednesday night, roads in St. Joseph, Marshall, and Starke Counties present difficult conditions to drive in. They also say that drivers should use additional caution on the bypass and the stretch of HWY 31 between South Bend and Plymouth.
