South Shore Train Passengers were stranded Saturday as service was suspended most of the day due to an accident.
Early Saturday morning a semi-truck lost its load of steel on the tracks east of the Gary Metro Station.
That stopped all service and left the tracks in South Bend empty and passengers scrambling to find alternate means of transportation.
At the station FOX 28 caught up with one lucky passenger who got to her destination thanks to the generosity of another.
"The woman working the counter overheard where I was going and indicated she was going to Portage, which is right near where I'm going so she offered me a ride," says traveler Nora Byrne.
The NICTD says South Shore plans to restore regular service beginning with westbound Train 610 departing Michigan City at 7:10 pm making all regular stops and arriving in Chicago at 8:52 pm.
The South Shore will resume a full weekend schedule on Sunday, December 30.
