"This special day is like something I am never going to forget," says dad, Alejandro Alvarez.
Alejandro and Jhontee Dietz kick off the New Year with a new baby girl. Diamond was born at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center at 5:09 am, making her the first baby of 2013 in St. Joseph County.
"I had no clue she would be the first," says mother, Dietz.
Dietz says it was a surprise, since her due date wasn't until January 9. "I was actually doing my hair in the bathroom and getting all ready to go to his brother's party and started feeling a little bit of pain and I said 'ok we're going to the hospital first."
Even then, this couple wasn't expecting a baby.
"The nurse came and said you gotta stay tonight and I was like 'ok here we go!" says Alvarez.
Diamond already has two brothers, but the couple says they're excited to have a little girl.
"I'm just ready for playing dress up. Gotta play dress up! You can't do that with boys," Dietz.
"We have a pretty nice daughter. She's quiet, but she had a lot of energy when she came out. She came out crying and kicking," says Alvarez.
Diamond was 6 pounds 15 ounces and the parents say they're thankful she's healthy.
"She's very beautiful," say Alvarez.
While Diamond was the first St. Joe County baby, two other Michiana newborns actually beat her into this world.
Andrea and Todd Cripe welcomed their son Hudson Lee at 3:41 am at Goshen Hospital.
"He came really quick and everything went well. So we're just happy to have him here. We just feel blessed to have a healthy baby and a New Year," says mom, Andrea Cripe.
We found a baby that was born even earlier than Diamond and Hudson. A baby girl named Kamryn was born at the LaPorte Hospital at 12:58 am.
