The South Bend Common Council will take up an ordinance that has everyone talking on Monday. And they're expected to put it to a vote.
Henry Davis Jr. and Tim Scott co-sponsored a bill that would allow residents to pay $20 dollars for a permit that would allow them to have up to six hens living in their backyard.
People who like the idea claim this method saves them money on food. And they also say eggs from backyard chickens taste better. But people opposed to the ordinance say it's more difficult to care for the chickens than you might think. They also claim chickens belong on a farm and not in the city, because they make a lot of noise and a big mess.
If the ordinance passes, Code Enforcement would go through the city to make sure people with permits are obeying the law and taking care of their chickens.
The Common Council will meet at the County City Building in downtown South Bend on Monday. Their meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. and again, they are expected to vote on the backyard chicken ordinance.
