An Elkhart County neighborhood is in a fight with the city over sewer service and Tuesday they rallied the troops.
Residents of the Valley View Hills neighborhood just outside Elkhart's city limits are angry with the city.
They say they're paying way too much for sewer service.
Residents have been paying three times what city residents pay and they've been fighting the battle for years.
"Since we moved here 18 years ago, we've had nothing but confrontation after confrontation about outlandish sewer charges by the city," says homeowner Jon Nelson.
And now, after 30 years, a new contract has been drafted.
Neighbors got together Tuesday to discuss it.
The contract means residents will pay $50 a month, plus whatever city residents pay.
"To look at it initially, I can say it's a deal, but as it accelerates, it's like a jet airplane, it takes way off," says Nelson.
The agreement also includes a petition for the city to annex the subdivision and they lose the right to fight an annex. It's something that's not sitting well with residents.
Councilman David Henke believes it would be in the neighbors' best interest to sign the agreement. He recognizes many residents don't want to be annexed because of their long-standing relationship with the city.
"Probably Elkhart City has not put their best hand out for this neighborhood association," says Henke.
Henke adds that the city isn't even interested in annexing the neighborhood.
So is there a solution?
Henke says the right thing for the city to do would be to annex the neighborhood, and in order to work out a deal, they need to meet with residents and talk things out.
