South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is joining a group of mayors hoping to prevent gun violence.
More than 800 mayors from across the country are already part of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. The group is co-chaired by are New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
The group is asking leaders in Washington to address issues, like background checks, banning military-style weapons and high-capacity magazines and making gun trafficking a federal crime.
"Like many communities across the United States, South Bend has witnessed senseless acts of violence in our neighborhoods involving illegally obtained guns," Mayor Buttigieg said in a written release. "In joining this group, South Bend is joining hundreds of cities across America to provide better safeguards for our communities and children."
Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry and Angola Mayor Dick Hickman pledged their support of the group on Monday. Mayors in Bloomington, Gary and Muncie also support the effort.
