News about Notre Dame's Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax is flooding social media.
FOX 28 talked to fans about what they think about everything, and to say the least. They're confused and shocked.
"It blows my mind because honestly it doesn't make sense," says Notre Dame student Kurt Natke.
Notre Dame fan Jacqueline Dubois says, "I didn't think it was real. I saw a lot of Facebook updates about it and I was like, 'no, there's no way this could be happening.'"
Notre Dame fans and students are trying to make sense of a bizarre announcement from the University that Manti Te'o was the victim of a hoax.
Some students say what they're hearing, that a woman befriended Manti then duped him into believing she died from leukemia, is just too crazy to be true.
"I believe and I trust she's real, first of all. And maybe they didn't have the closest relationship, but I'm sure that they were at least close friends, and most importantly, she exists and this wasn't an entire hoax," says Notre Dame student Matt Britton.
Others say, it's totally possible considering a small lie can get big fast, especially when the Internet is involved.
"I was incredibly shocked, but you can also see why it is believable. Because if it is a hoax and he was getting tricked, yeah it could have just been a practical joke that got out of hand," says Notre Dame student Jonathan Smith.
Fans say they're withholding judgement until more details come out, but just hope the news doesn't get worse.
"I really hope that it's not true that he would have anything to do with it. But I think it's unfortunate and embarrassing that something like this would happen to him," says Dubois.
