The South Bend Police Department celebrated the retirement of Interim Chief Chuck Hurley, again.
Hurley retired for the second time Friday and Mayor Pete Buttigeig gave Hurley and his wife Joan each a key to the city.
Ten months ago the mayor asked Hurley, a former police chief and deputy coroner to come out of retirement. He asked him to guide the police department during the search for a new chief.
Hurley says he wanted to help the department and it didn't take him long to say yes. Now that Ronald Teachman has been named as the new permanent chief, Hurley is ready to step down.
"It's a happy day. It's a sad day. Because people who you work closely with are not going to be around everyday. On the other hand, it gives me back my personal life and my freedom."
They shared Hurley's 1968 recruitment picture during the reception. Mayor Buttigieg said Hurley has extraordinary patience and is owed a lot of gratitude for what he did.
