Mayor of Indiana city wants armed officers in schools

The mayor of a north-central Indiana city is pledging his support for a proposal to post armed officers in the city's schools.

Peru Mayor Jim Walker said Monday during his annual state of the city address that his administration is trying to find funding to pay for five armed guards at the main entrances of Peru's five schools.

Walker says some people say a school massacre like the one in Connecticut that killed 20 students could never happen in Peru, but "we don't want to roll the dice on this."

The Kokomo Tribune reports Peru Community Schools Superintendent Chuck Brimbury is seeking financial support from the city, county and local donors to help the district foot the estimated cost of $120,000 needed to pay for the guards.
