The South Bend Police Department is welcoming in its new Police Chief.
Ron Teachman was sworn in at 1:30 p.m. at the Police Department on Wednesday. Mayor Pete Buttigieg selected Teachman from three finalists on December 28th after nine-month search and hiring process.
The new chief comes to South Bend from New Bedford, Massachusetts where he served as the police chief. He also spent time overseas as a part of a State Department-sponsored police reform program.
Teachman takes over for Interim Chief Chuck Hurley who was put in charge in March 2012. Chief Darryl Boykins resigned in the midst of a wire-tapping scandal before withdrawing his resignation and being demoted to captain by Mayor Buttigieg. That controversy is currently being hashed out in federal court.
FOX28's Amanda Johnson went out to talk to community members and leaders about what they want to see from new chief. FOX28's Traci Capellman sits down tonight for a one-on-one interview with Chief Teachman this afternoon. Tune in tonight to FOX28 News at 10 to hear what he had to say and what they community reaction is.
