Penn Township firefighters dealt with freezing temperatures and snowfall while battling a fire at a Mishawaka home early Monday morning.
It broke out inside a chimney at approximately 1:43 on Fir Road between McKinley Avenue and Day Road. Firefighters say thanks to help from nearby departments along with some other resources they were able to put the fire out without any big problems.
"We haven't had any complications, thank goodness," said Penn Township Assistant Chief John Snyder. "There wasn't a large amount of fire to deal with and of course we had our mutual aid partners, City of Mishawaka and Clay Township, here so it went smooth with the equipment and manpower."
Two people were home when it happened. They called in the fire after evacuating and were unharmed. Overall, not a whole lot of damage was done to the home.
"When the first arriving units got here they found fire in the rear of the home and possibly some extension into a closet of the inside of the home," Snyder said.
The fire may also have spread to the attic. Firefighters spent much of the morning trying to figure that out, along with how the fire started.
"It was reported to us as a creosote fire with wood burning into the chimney and it looks like it may have extended to the structure itself," Snyder said.
