In the wake of national shooting tragedies over the past year people across the country are trying to figure out how to keep American school children safe.
The South Bend Police Department has an idea of their own. They're working with local schools on a new patrol program. The hope is that it will create a safer environment in those schools.
Day shift patrol officers will do walk throughs throughout the day at schools within their beats. The officers will assist in the physical security of the school and do not expect to interact with students anymore than they normally would.
Twenty-six schools within South Bend are partnering with the police department in this program.
FOX 28 does expect to speak with police on Tuesday to find out more about the program. As soon as we hear what they have to say about it we'll let you know right here on FOX28.com.
