LaPorte restaurant makes 364 foot long BLT

Posted:

How does a tasty BLT sound right now?  How about one that is longer than a football field?  A restaurant in LaPorte made one that size today in an attempt to make the world's longest BLT.

Brad Hindsley the owner of Spire Farm-to-Fork Cuisine said the ingredients included, "227 pounds of bacon.  We have 100 pounds of our signature tomato jam, 30 pounds of salad greens, and 5 gallons of our garlic aioli."  There were also 180 loaves of bread made by Arturo's Baked Goods and More.  It all made up a BLT that measure in at, "turned out to be 364 feet and two inches," said Hindsley.

Hindsley thought of the idea to build the world's longest BLT back in October.  Sunday he and 80 volunteers put it all together.  Now they wait to find out if their never ending sandwich wins the title.  "We had two official judges here and we got pictures and video that we are going to send all the documents to Guinness so hopefully they'll approve our record," said Hindsley.

Volunteers who helped with the carnivorous construction said it was a great experience.  "It's good to know that we helped make something that'll go down in history now," said Drew Lipscond.

Making history is great, but how does it taste?  Lipscond said, "The tomato paste is really good, that bacon is also really good."  And several others who tried the sandwich agree.  "It was good, it's not your traditional BLT but it was very good," said Rebecca Coffeen.  Inky Schoof said, "The sandwich today is great."  And Jan Hadella said, "I thought it was very good."

And it doesn't just taste good, it's for a good cause.  You could purchase a slice of the sandwich for $5 and Hindsley said, "we're donating all of the proceeds to date to the New Day Foundation, the Salvation Army, and the LOK Wishing Foundation."  They were able to sell 246 feet of the BLT and donated the remaining 118 feet to the LaPorte County Home and other local homeless shelters and soup kitchens.
