For the next two weeks, our Doppler RADAR at the National Weather Service in Syracuse will be offline. It is the next radar to undergo a much anticipated upgrade.
It will soon become dual polarimetric (dual-pol), which will be the most significant upgrade to our RADAR network since the 1990's. Dual-pol transmits and receives horizontal and vertical information about weather in the area.
This will enable us to more accurately read and analyze precipitation data. We'll be able to do things like better determine precipitation type, size, intensity, and location. Also we can better determine rainfall estimates. This will also help us forecaster severe weather to help protect the public.
You can learn much more of what dual-pol actually means and the benefits of this upgrade by on the Nation Weather Service website.
During the shutdown period, FOX28 will continue to use information from surrounding radars, satellite information, and more advanced forecasting technology to continue bringing you the area's only guaranteed forecast.
You can also get your weather information in the palm of your hands with mobile text alerts from FOX28 and the FOX28 Weather App.
