Late Tuesday night many local Republicans sounded off on some of what President Obama had to say during his State of the Union Address.
FOX 28 received comment from Indiana 2nd District freshman congresswoman Jackie Walorski, 3rd District Congressman Marlin Stutzman, and Michigan 6th District congressman Fred Upton. They all expressed some disagreement to President Obama's plan to get the economy back on track.
"The formula to revitalizing this economy is not more government, more costly regulation, or higher taxes," Walorski said. "We've tried that approach. It has yielded more debt, a stalled economy, and political gridlock."
She also expressed her displeasure with fellow members of Congress for not being able to work together to balance the nation's budget.
"In Indiana, Hoosiers sit around their kitchen tables and make tough choices to keep a budget in their households, and they expect Congress to do the same. For too long, there has been disconnect between Washington politics and common sense principles—and our families are paying the price."
Stutzman echoed many of Walorski's sentiments. He also said more lawmakers need to follow Indiana's lead and come up with "common sense" solutions.
"Americans can ill afford the same failed policies of borrowing, spending and bailouts of the past six years," he said. "Our nation's strength isn't found in Washington. It's found in the common sense, values, and freedoms that Americans live out each day. Washington could learn by watching how we balance budgets in Indiana. House Republicans are ready to work toward real solutions that empower families, unleash the creativity of entrepreneurs, and save the American dream for generations to come."
Upton may not agree with everything Obama has to say. But he did mention that he's glad the President is trying to work with his Republican opposition.
"I was heartened by the President's repeated call to work beyond party lines on the many pressing issues before us," he said. "Meeting these challenges will not be easy, but it is necessary for the future prosperity of our nation."
