South Bend Residents who have been dealing with flooding in their homes for months are finally seeing some relief. A pump was turned on Friday at the Former New Energy Ethanol Plant in Rum Village. Homes in the area started flooding after the plant shut down in November. It used to pump millions of gallons of water out of the ground each day. The pump that was turned on Friday will take about four million gallons of water out of the ground each day.
Sunday residents said they're grateful for the relief from all the water. "It used to sound like somebody turned a faucet on in my basement with the water pouring into the parameter...now you don't hear any water pouring usually," said Peggy Tomkiewicz.
Peggy said she and other residents are happy about the relief but they are still very worried about the future. She said this is just a temporary band aid and a long term solution is still needed.
