South Bend's Century Center has been under fire lately.
City officials are unhappy that the center has been losing money.
"We are certainly committed to improving the financial performance, we've had several meetings with the council, we share a lot of information with them, obviously the great recession affected our business a great deal," says Greg Downes, President of the center's board of managers.
Downes and his board met this morning to discuss ways to improve the bottom line.
"We need more convention business and fewer meetings, we probably need to have more for-profit events and fewer not-for-profit events," says Downes.
He also says he realizes the importance of the center to the community saying, "I ran into a couple guys yesterday who are working out and they both came up to me, because they read about the Century Center, both of them had been to prom, they're now in their forties, they had been to prom at the Century Center, and they just kind of gave me a heads up and said, "I hope things work out, I've still got fond memories of that venue."
