Students at IUSB are trying to find solutions to the ongoing debate of gun violence. A public forum was held Thursday morning at the student activities center to discuss gun control, mental health and other issues.
A panel consisting of faculty, mental health professionals and gun advocates led the discussion. The forum also focused on recent shootings like Newtown, Connecticut and Aurora, Colorado.
Organizers say the forum wasn't about pushing an agenda, but exploring acceptable solutions. "What we want to talk about, rather than thinking about 'all or nothing,' is there anything we might agree on," said IUSB Political Science Professor Elizabeth Bennion. "The folks that really have the loudest voices and bully pulpits on this issue tend to be 'all or nothing.' But we find public opinion much more nuanced than that."
IUSB plans on having more public forums on this issue in the future. The event was hosted by the American Democracy Project and IUSB's Political Science Club.
