Students give speeches for black history month

It takes a lot sometimes to get up in front of your friends and teachers... and give a speech.

But students at Elkhart Memorial are putting their nerves aside tonight...

to compete in the 18th annual Black History Month Oratory competition.

The best part for the teachers... is to see the students conquer their fears.

"I like the surprise," said Memorial High School Teacher Janie Boyden. "I like to see a kid come out of this and have such confidence they didn't have when they went into this program. Hopefully that will lead to better things in the future."

The event features speeches centered around diversity in education.
