Notre Dame Basketball unveils new unique uniform

So far the Notre Dame men's Basketball team has worn four different uniforms this season, but the new jerseys they plan to wear in the tournament are of a completely different breed.

The socks and shoes are neon green, the shorts have camouflage patterns in them, and the jerseys have florescent numbers and logos.

"It looks like a leprechaun threw up and they made a shirt out of it," said Trey York, after seeing the jerseys for the first time.

Clearly not everyone is a fan of the jerseys the Irish basketball teams plan to wear in the Big East and NCAA tournaments. However, the guys and girls who are going to wear them are excited for the new look.

"I really like them," said Notre Dame guard Eric Atkins. "I think they're very different and it gives us a standing out effect."

After seeing the Adidas "highlighter" style uniforms unveiled last season by Baylor and Louisville, the men's team says they were anxious to get their own.

"Everybody was happy because a couple of Adidas teams got the jerseys last year and we didn't," said Jerian Grant, Notre Dame guard. "So this year to know that we get them is exciting for us."

It is not just the current players who like them either, Head Coach Mike Brey says these new uniforms help get the school more exposure in some key areas.

"I've had four or five texts from key recruits who love [the new uniform]," said Brey "That's good enough for me."

The players love it, but how about the fans? When many of them saw the jerseys for the first time, there were mixed reviews.

"They're not that flattering," said Notre Dame fan Gabby Sanchez. "Lime green is not the best choice."

Color played the biggest role in whether fans liked or disliked the uniforms.

"I like the light green," said South Bend resident Nancy Lorenzo. "It's really pretty."

There is one thing that both the fans and players agree on though. They both hope the jerseys bring the Irish luck in the tournament.

"I won't complain about them if [the basketball teams] win," said Emily Schmid, a Notre Dame student.

The first time Notre Dame will break the uniforms out will be in the Big East tournament. For the women, that starts on March 8th and the men's starts on the 12th.

Other Adidas sponsored schools will be wearing similar jerseys, including Notre Dame's Big East rivals Cincinnati and Louisville.
