A St. Joseph County man is in the hospital after being involved in a stand-off with multiple police departments.
At 6:27 p.m. Monday police were dispatched to U.S. 31 South near New Road. They found 66-year-old Michael J. Carrico inside a detached garage near his home. The suspect was in the garage with all the windows and doors closed and a car running. Police also say he had a long gun in his hands.
Later a SWAT team was called and they broke in the garage where they found Carrico with multiple self-inflicted gunshot wounds in his torso. He was taken to the hospital. As of Tuesday morning, officials tell FOX 28 Carrico is listed in critical condition.
A police officer was also hurt on his way to the stand off. Cpl. Lonnie Foresman was on his way to the scene when he hit several deer near the intersection of New Road and Redwood Road. He went through a roadside ditch and stopped in a field. Foresman was taken to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Officers from Lakeville, North Liberty, South Bend and St. Joseph County Police Departments were all involved in the stand-off.
