Just like anyone else pizza delivery people do not really like driving in snow, but more snow means more business for them.
"The weather is bad," said Yvette Lacy, when her pizza arrived Tuesday. "The roads are nasty, so it's not a good time to go out for anything."
With how bad the weather was Tuesday afternoon many families in Michiana, like the Lacys decided to avoid the pounding snow all together and just order some pizza.
"It's all about being busy," said Papa John's driver Ryan Hall, about the bad weather. "Whenever the weather gets bad we just get swamped with orders."
Hall has been driving for Papa John's in South Bend for over 21 years and he says he learned early on the heavier the snow, the heavier the tips.
"If it's snowing people don't want to go outside," said Hall. "[Customers] tip better when they feel sorry for you. We're working twice as hard too, so it's worth it."
How busy could a pizza place get on a snowy Tuesday in March? Try busier than Super Bowl Sunday.
"The Super Bowl we're busy for like two hours. We're going to be busy all night, this is going to be a better money maker for Papa Johns and for me too," said Hall.
At the Papa John's store off Ironwood Dr. they had to start preparing for a big day once they saw the weather taking a turn for the worse Tuesday. That meant calling in extra help and getting ready for the phones to ring off the hook.
"We just get prepared so we're ready for the rush. Get everything as ready as we possibly can. You know boxes folded and pizzas ready to go," said Papa John's manager Eric Ungerecht.
While they make pizzas quicker, the one thing that can't do when it gets bad outside is guarantee delivery times. That is to protect drivers like Hall, so he can stay safe, families their dinners.
"I've only been in one accident in the whole 21 years. I'm just very careful because a pizza is not worth my car or my life," said Hall.
Hall added if the St. Joseph Co. calls for white out conditions Papa John's will not make the drivers go out. He also said while it can be frustrating to drive in the snow, but the money he makes by the end of the night makes it worth it.
